Horizons HOSA: Future Health Professionals

Exciting happenings at Horizons CIS!

Last year we received a grant from the CDE to develop a Health-Science Career Pathway for our students. We are the first small alternative education school of its kind to be bringing this in and it has meant a lot of hard work, networking, community support, partnerships and enthusiastic students.

Program Updates

Our Health Careers grant funding (allowable expenditures) changed since our community advisory meeting in June.  This year, we can fund leadership activities for HOSA, student activities, and teacher externships (not new courses or equipment as previously discussed).  Because of this change, Horizons teachers are attending trainings and looking for industry sites to observe health care professionals in action. Students are experiencing even more work-based learning activities, projects, and field trips.

Horizons is collaborating with Prospect's science teacher and Health Careers Grant Team member Nancy.  Prospect is our continuation high school on the same campus. We plan to introduce health careers to all her students through hands-on activities and lessons.  Any interested students will be brought to the Health Career Fair at Mt. Diablo Adult Ed in Spring to preview the "Career in under a Year" CTE programs.

We received our school scrubs! HOSA students wear scrubs to class on Wednesdays and to field trips. A Graduation Honors program was created. We will have our first honored graduates walk across the stage at Horizons Graduation with earned cords and/or a special HOSA stole. Students in the program earn points toward Graduation Honors by maintaining academic good standing, accumulating service hours, attending conferences, and leading activities.

Cal State East Bay Professor Dr. Eckfield connected us with Genentech's Suzanne Lee. Genentech donated equipment to Horizons to create a patient care simulation room: exam table, scale, vision screener, mayo stands, and stools.  We're working to find a space on our Pleasant Hill campus to set up Health Careers Center.  Our students will be College and Career ready!
